Session Overview

Synopsis

A massive multi-day siege engulfs Oleg Keep as Lord Vellor's undead, Baron Dunthmore's defenders, Flan clansmen, and Underdark raiders clash in a chaotic free-for-all.

Narrative

The Assault Begins (Days 1–2)

Lord Vellor's forces have besieged Oleg Keep and the surrounding villages of Grenvik and Oleg. Baron Dunthmore has secured himself in the keep along with elements of the Rippers and Red Company who made sorties to disrupt Vellor's forces. The two armies traded siege fire as night fell. At daybreak, the undead fell back to Grenvik Bog. Both sides regrouped while the party toured the area by airship. At night, the undead attacked again before withdrawing at dawn. Stirkirk led Burtons Irregulars in a charge to breach the south wall just after dawn.

The rules of engagement and victory conditions were established for the major factions: Vellor, the Baron and allies, the party and their allies, the Flan villagers, and Underdark spoilers.

Day 3 of the Siege

Flan farmers and their Druid allies swept in from the north, burning fields and homes surrounding Oleg Keep. The Baron launched a retaliatory catapult barrage against the raiders, who returned arrow volleys.

Rushing to harvest bodies, the 52nd Marauders ran into Burtons Irregulars fighting at the breach. Suffering 30% casualties, Burton's Irregulars began a retreat when Vendrix swooped in with his breath weapon. As Vellor's troops moved to harvest the fallen, Stirkirk ordered his troops to self-detonate their explosive vests rather than be raised as undead. Rolling explosions echoed through the Blemu Hills.

To the north and west, the 1st Battalion of Logeth held off a three-pronged assault by Death Dealers, Marauders, and Wraiths. 1st Logeth later flanked and attacked the Red Company, who forced them back with 70% casualties.

The gnome airship carrying the party arrived, launching spells and missiles onto the massed troops 150 feet below and forcing the Red Company Hornets back inside the walls. At nightfall, the Baron's mage magically warded the north and south gates with sigils.

Day 4 of the Siege

Flan villagers continued their scorched-earth campaign around the South Gate. Barbarians swept out of the woods to hit the Screaming Spears along the southeast wall, driving them off before moving southeast to sack Grenvik along with the Flan villagers.

High above in the airship, the party spotted the 45th Marauders advancing on the Elves of the Ivae Orr. Blasting them with spells and arrows, the party eliminated the unit. The Elves then ambushed undead securing Oleg Road, resulting in a draw.

In Oleg Village, Vellor's forces surrounded and eliminated the Rippers' 2nd Battalion, raising half as undead before advancing on the North Gatehouse. Vendrix attacked the gatehouse, triggering the Baron's hidden sigil. Vendrix was wounded, but Vellor's forces reached the gate. High above, the green dragon Selena and Lady Furweather strafed the courtyard, convinced by the party that Vellor betrayed Vendrix. Meanwhile, Drow and Duergar breached the dungeon complex beneath the keep via old mine shafts.

Day 5 of the Siege

Ripper reinforcements arrived from the mines and charged through the breached wall into the orchard, driving the Screaming Spears off the wall. Vellor's 73rd Siege Battery partially collapsed the northwest tower with heavy catapult fire.

The Red Company Hornets fought off Drow emerging from the garden well. Vendrix then dived upon the Red Company garrison, inflicting 50% casualties and leaving 102 bodies on the field. Druids in bird form attacked the gnomish airship; after an even aerial trade, both sides retreated.

Duergar burst from a cellar into the courtyard to attack the Red Company before both sides withdrew. Drow and Ripper reinforcements clashed headlong, with the Underdark forces eventually pulling back to the tunnels. Selena and Lady Furweather strafed the exposed courtyard with poison gas, killing scores of troops.

Nighttime of the Fifth Day

Ghoulish mages invaded the keep to raise the dead. A patrol of mage hunters charged out to eliminate them but were swarmed and killed. Vendrix dived on the Ripper Strippers, adding 85 more bodies to Vellor's army.

Catapults reduced 40% of the northwest tower to ruin. Undead units clambered over the broken wall undetected before dawn while defenders bunkered inside. Elves broke their secret truce with Vellor as Dartmouth's Raiders attacked the 73rd siege works, forcing them from the field.

Day 6 of the Siege

Baron Dunthmore abandoned the keep via a secret passage. The remaining human defenders offered their surrender to Vellor with only 30% of their forces remaining, while the Rippers fought to the last. Flan clansmen and barbarians retreated back into the hills, leaving the party waiting for dawn when a trumpet call of truce broke across the field.
