Session Overview

Synopsis

Following Lexana Brightshore's escape with the Book of Vedrick, the party survives the climax of a chaotic three-way standoff against a rogue Mind Flayer, facility security automatons, and an invading Vegepygmy horde before enduring a violent launch through a quantum singularity to land at Zephyr'on Spaceport.

Narrative

Session 153: Ambush & The Mind Flayer

Picking up directly from the corridor meatgrinder following Lexana Brightshore's escape, combat opens with chaotic blunders as a monster attack suffers a severe Critical Fumble (rolling 77 on 1d100+1d20+1d10), dealing 10 self-inflicted damage and stunning the creature for a round. Durmen opens with a Fire Bolt (20 to hit, 14 Fire damage) against a Police Robot before disengaging. Aldran rages and swings at the Mind Flayer (Phasnosh Greater Acolyte)—which had been recovering from a fumble in Session 152—but misses with a 2 to hit.

The Mind Flayer retaliates brutally against its primary target, Aldran, striking with Extract Brain (16 to hit) for 42 Piercing damage and scoring a Critical Hit with Tentacles (29 to hit) for 53 Psychic damage + 13 bonus damage. The resulting Critical Strike table roll (72) knocks Aldran Prone, forces him to drop his weapon, and deals +10 additional damage.

Meanwhile, the Android Nurse—having previously paralyzed Aldran—targets Egon with her Syringe Arm (17 to hit, 7 Piercing damage), causing him to fail a DC 10 Concentration check (rolled 9). Egon's Halo of Spores pulses back (3 and 7 Necrotic damage). The Police Robot fires its Stun Ray; Egon fails his DC 15 Con save (rolled 5) and is Stunned, though the robot misses its follow-up Grappler Arm (14 to hit). Nail succeeds on his DC 15 Con save with a 14 to shake off paralysis as the session cuts short.

Session 154: Counterattack, Horde & Spaceflight

Recognizing the illithid as an acute threat to ship systems, the Police Robots pivot programming and grapple the Mind Flayer three times (21, 20, and 24 to hit, dealing 31 total Slashing damage). Balmaris unleashes a 7th-Level Guiding Bolt (20 to hit, 40 Radiant damage) directly into the grappled Mind Flayer, which succeeds on multiple DC 10 Concentration checks before executing an emergency Astral Shift to escape. Balmaris's 7th-Level Spiritual Weapon misses a Police Robot (16 to hit, 17 Force damage on a miss/shield). Egon hits a Police Robot with Chill Touch (19 to hit, 23 Necrotic damage) and casts a 4th-Level Healing Word on Aldran (13 HP restored).

Durmen approaches the Android Nurse ("Robo-Dame") and uses fast-talking diplomacy (Persuasion rolls 10, 14, and 19) to convince her the party was acting in self-defense. Robo-Dame stands down ("Didn't realize it was Durmen. Awaiting instructions") and uses Restore Function (Greater Restoration) to aid the party and bring Aldran back from the brink of total brain destruction. A horde of Vegepygmies swarms the northern corridor. Durmen disengages (16) and Aldran retreats (23). The Police Robot detects the biological threat, abandons the party ("Must contain the contagion!"), and charges the horde. Nail covers the rear (26).

Balmaris casts Blade Barrier (6th-Level Evocation), shredding incoming waves in four successive pulses (39, 39, 37, and 36 Force damage). Durmen finishes off a surviving Vegepygmy with Fire Bolt (26 to hit, 12 Fire damage). Egon tricks a Police Robot into the hallway, locks the vault door using an orange-and-black security key, and searches the room (Investigation 11), finding 3 Glowing Pink Healing Potions. Nail chugs two potions (19 HP and 19 HP), Balmaris catches a thrown potion from Aldran (19 catch check) and drinks it (28 HP), and Aldran drinks the third (13 HP). As Aldran's brain physically regenerates from the Mind Flayer's Extract Brain attack, his Intelligence stat is re-rolled (4d6kh3), leaping from an 8 to an 18 strategic genius.

Robo-Dame warns the party that the ship's inertial dampeners were destroyed millennia ago and to brace for launch. The ship tears into a quantum singularity; lacking launch chairs, everyone in the mess hall takes impact damage (Egon takes 24 Bludgeoning damage, Robo-Dame takes 20). Following a terrifying moment of weightlessness, the ship violently impacts the ground. Robo-Dame uses her remaining medical reserves to restore the party to Max HP and escorts them to the airlock, explaining that the ship has arrived on Zephyr'on—a major Phasnosh Empire spaceport—and that she is bound to the vessel as its power fades.

Stepping through the airlock, the party makes Constitution saves against residual atmospheric/coolant gas: Aldran (20) and Egon (15) pass, while Durmen (7), Balmaris (13), and Nail (13) fail, leaving them suffering from severe nausea. The party emerges onto a twisted metal pier overlooking a late-summer forest and ancient, battle-scarred ruins at Zephyr'on Spaceport.
