Synopsis
Stranded after their vessel crashes on an unknown world, the party makes first contact with the local subjugated Cree tribe before defending them in a high-stakes, two-phase battle against a pair of Mutated Ettins, concluding with the sudden arrival of a Warforged dropship.
Narrative
Session 155: First Contact & The Cree Scouts Surveying the smoking wreckage of their fallen vessel, the reality of their plight set in fast. Realizing they were no longer in Greyhawk, the party took cover in the shadow of a large outcropping of rock and ship debris to scout the surrounding terrain. Five torchlit figures were spotted picking their way through the gouges and rubble in a line, moving cautiously around unseen obstacles. Choosing diplomacy over a surprise attack, the party stepped out with hands raised: "Pale, good travelers! We are humble adventurers... Where am I?" The lead scout, cautious and battle-hardened, held them at bay and called out for them to halt: "Halt! Stay where you are. Don't come any closer. What is the name of your people? Are you guys stupid?" "How would we know? Where are you from?" "From the hill. Can't understand you... You have drinks? Something that's wine or mead?" Offering rations instead of mead—which the scout misidentified as being "like meat"—the party brought the scout in close. Bending down to take a bite of the offered food, the scout squinted at the party with narrowing eyes: "Yuck. The truth: you do not look like the Masters said you would look like. They said you would all have robes and no armor. You all look like us." Identifying his group as members of the Cree (designation C351), the scout explained that his people were subjugated by "the Masters" (or "Old Ones") down the mountain. While agreeing to escort the party to them, Cree warned that they would not be allowed to return once taken below. When questioned about a fleeing woman or a "metal dragon," Cree mentioned a wizard had been spotted high in the sky roughly half an hour before the crash. Session 155: Ambush of the Mutated Ettin Before the party could proceed down the mountain, distant roars echoed near the crash site as two Mutated Ettins began slaughtering the remaining Cree tribe members. Though Cree was initially resigned to his tribe's fate out of terror of the Old Ones, the party pushed back: "What I don't understand is how you can stand here and watch your people be slaughtered by that two-headed creature out there." "There's a chance my people can beat the creatures. We have never defeated the Old Ones... but we will follow." Grabbing burning pieces of wood for torches, the party rushed back to intervene: Egon opened the assault with Chill Touch, preventing the beast's regeneration, while Aldran waded into melee with Sword Burst and his +1 Greataxe. The Ettin retaliated with its Roar of the Unhinged, emitting an alien shriek that disoriented Nail and Durmen. Nail recovered to land devastating divine smites, while Durmen brought down the Ettin's first phase with a critical Ray of Frost. Egon attempted to raise the corpse using Fungal Infestation, but Aldran severed the head to stop the reanimation. Session 155: Chaos, Execution & Iron from the Sky The threat escalated as the secondary Ettin re-engaged: Egon locked down the battleground with Entangle and summoned a noxious Cloudkill fog before casting Confusion to leave the monster completely dazed. Durmen scorched the mutant with Fire Bolts and an Ice Knife, enduring the beast's Reactive Blood Burst. Reeling from the spell assault, the Ettin suffered a Critical Fumble with its Salvage Hammer, taking 8 self-damage and recoiling 50 feet backward. Nail and Aldran capitalized on the retreat with heavy opportunity attacks. Aldran landed a massive follow-up strike using his Savage Attacker feat, and Egon delivered the killing blow with a point-blank Poison Spray for 22 poison damage. With the Ettins dead and the party tending to their wounds, a low rumble echoed from above. A dropship descended through the haze, its plasma jets briefly scorching the night sky. Six Warforged dropped simultaneously from the vessel, landing heavily in the rubble. As the surviving Cree scouts stared in sheer terror, the party readied their weapons for an immediate confrontation.
